Grains

The grain was the base unit of the English weight system and is the only common unit across the Avoirdupois, Troy and Apothercaries systems. It is part of both the British Imperial and US Customary systems, being equal to 1/7000th of a pound. Since 1959 it has been formerly defined in terms of the SI system of units as 64.79891 milligrams

Unit System

Avoirdupois - British Imperial & US Customary

Definition

The grain is defined has 64.79891 milligrams as from the International Yard and Pound agreement of 1959.

Base Unit

Pound

There are 7000 grains to the avoirdupois pound and 5760 grains to the troy pound or apothecaries pound.

Abbreviation

Formal: gr

Information

The grain is one of the earliest measures of weight with recorded uses in ancient Greece. It is based upon the weight of wheat and/or barley grains dependent on location, although these grain seeds can vary significantly in weight.

The grain was adopted into the avoirdupois weight system in 1588 by Elizabeth I of England and thus became part of the British Imperial and US Customary weight systems. It is the smallest unit of the avoirdupois system.

Grains were formerly used in weights for a lot of medicinal compounds and are still used for weighing gunpowder and for indicating the level of propellant in bullets.

In the US grains are used when measuring emissions and the amount of moisture in the air with grains/cubic foot being used as the unit.

Global Adoption

Grains are used primarily in the US, with usage in most other countries having been replaced by metric units.
